Lee Westwood Biography

Lee Westwood is a professional golfer hailing from England and he currently competes in both the PGA Tour as well as the European Tour. In terms of his performances on the golf course, Westwood is by far one of the most consistent performers ever to have played the game of golf. He is among a select list of golfers who have won a major title on every major continent that they have played on and this includes both the PGA Tour and the European Tour as well. Such is his consistence that he has been named thrice as the best golfer in Europe, winning the European Tour Golfer of the Year Awards in 1998, 2000 and 2009 and was also awarded with the European Tour Order of Merit in 2000 and 2009. Westwood has been an integral part of the European team that faces the challenge of the United States team in the Ryder Cup, making seven consecutive appearances in the event. Towards the end of the 2010 season, Lee Westwood displaced Tiger Woods from the position of the world’s number one golfer thus, ending his long reign at the top and in turn, he became the first golfer from the British Isles since the great Nick Faldo in 1994 to reach the top of the golfing world. He was the number one golfer in the world for almost 22 weeks.

Born in the Nottinghamshire region of England, Westwood’s first tryst with golf came at the age of 13 years when he was bought a half set by his grandparents. His father also played golf alongside him in order to encourage the youngster. Westwood was a very good sportsman while at school and made the rugby, cricket and football teams as well. Although Lee Westwood started to play golf at a relatively later age, he still managed to reach the top of the pile in around two years, winning his first amateur title in 1990. After winning the British Youth Championship title in 1993, he decided to turn professional with golf.

He is currently playing in the European Tour, which he joined in 1994. He also had a spell in the PGA Tour as well and has a total of 35 professional titles. He has won 2 PGA Tour titles and also has 21 titles on the European Tour along with 4 titles on the Japan Golf Tour. Lee Westwood is a model professional in terms of his playing style and discipline and young kids playing golf would do themselves a huge favor if they do decide to follow his style.
