Westwood Shares Lead In WGC

After the first round of the World Golf Championships, which is taking place in Mexico, the player Lee Westwood is in the lead with six-way tie.

The player on the course was expected to be the leader overnight, but bogeyed the two holes (which were final) to end with a round of 67.

The player is joined on four under by Americans Phil Mickelson, compatriot Ross Fisher, Spain’s Jon Rahm Ryan Moore and Jimmy Walker.

Rory McIlroy after 68 is a shot further back.

After recovering from the rib injury, he is coming for his first tournament. It was the long gap of almost seven weeks. McIlroy made par on 14 holes, hitting one eagle, two birdies and one bogey in a solid round.

Talking about the performance of Westwood in the first round of the event then he was uneven in his scoring. In his first 16 holes he made eight birdies and before that he had back-to-back bogeys to add to two others earlier in his round. (more…)

The next few days will see Thomas Bjorn named the captain of the Europe Ryder Cup team, and handed the task of reclaiming the Ryder Cup from the US in 2018 at Paris.

It is understood that the Dane has been said to be the unanimous choice among the five-man selection committee. This is despite the merits the other candidates such as Miguel Angel Jimenez and Paul Lawrie possess.

It became probable that Bjorn would get the nod when Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood signified their intention to enter the Le Golf National both as players.

Bjorn has won 21 times all across the world and has appeared on three times, while acting as an assistant on four different occasions, including at Hazeltine where he assisted Darren Clarke in September. That was the only time he ever got in a defeat.

Rory Grouped With 3 Americans At WGC Match Play

World # 1 golfer Rory has been reportedly teamed with 3 high rated American golfers for Cadillac WGC Match Play that is to be held at San Francisco.

The grouping was decided by a draw that put the Northern Irishman against the reigning FedExCup champ Billy Horschel, along with Brandt Snedeker (7-times PGA champ) & major champ Jason Dufner under round-robin play for the championship to be starting at Harding Park TPC.

The WGC Match Play event, the very first of elite 4 WGC events in 2015, was a famous knockout championship since its foray in the year 1999 till 2014. It implied that grand players were sent for packing on first day.

However, the very format has received a tweak this year with the effort to provide the top seeds good chances to recover from one poor match.

Jordan Spieth, the Masters champion & the 2nd seed in ground of 64, drew Lee Westwood of England, Matt Every of America & Mikko Ilonen from Finland.
